Three Thrive students learning together on acoustic and electronic drum kits

Drums give kids something to feel.

Rhythm is something kids can experience right away. They can hear it. Move with it. Play it. And feel how their part fits with everyone else. In Group Drums, students learn real drumming skills while discovering how exciting it is to make music together.

What happens in Group Drums?

Students may work on:

  • Drum technique
  • Rhythm
  • Timing
  • Coordination
  • Grooves
  • Musical patterns
  • Listening
  • Dynamics
  • Ear training
  • Improvisation
  • Creative challenges
  • Playing with other musicians
  • Independent practice skills

Our teachers give students clear structure while leaving room to experiment, create, and develop confidence behind the kit.

What does class feel like?

Active. Focused. Creative. And yes — energetic. Kids get opportunities to play, listen, move, solve problems, and experience what happens when everyone finds the groove together. There is plenty of fun. But there is also real learning happening inside it.

More than keeping a beat.

Confidence

Drums give kids lots of opportunities to experience progress they can hear and feel. A rhythm finally clicks. Their hands and feet begin working together. They hold the beat while someone else plays. They get through something that felt impossible a few minutes earlier. Those wins add up.

Focus

Playing drums requires attention. Students learn to listen carefully, stay with a pattern, notice what is happening around them, and keep going even when something feels challenging.

Creativity

Rhythm is full of possibilities. Students get opportunities to experiment with grooves, sounds, patterns, fills, and their own musical ideas. We want kids to learn the rules — and then discover what they can create with them.

Collaboration

A drummer has an important job. What they play affects everyone else. Students learn to listen to the group, stay connected, adjust, and understand how their part contributes to the whole. That helps kids discover: “What I do matters.”

Questions about getting started.

Yes. Students do not need previous drumming experience. We help them build the basics one step at a time and give them opportunities to experience success early. Starting alongside other beginners can make the process feel much more comfortable.

It can be. Drumming gives kids a place to turn energy into focus. They learn how to listen, control movement, follow patterns, make choices, and work with other musicians. The goal is not to make energetic kids less energetic. It is to help them learn how to use that energy well.

Mistakes happen constantly when you are learning an instrument. That is part of the process. We help kids learn how to notice what happened, make an adjustment, and try again. There is no expectation that they walk in already knowing what to do. Confidence grows through doing things that are new.

Group Drums or private drum lessons?

Both can work well.

Group Drums may be a great fit if your child:

  • Loves rhythm and movement
  • Enjoys learning with other kids
  • Likes active classes
  • Is motivated by playing music together
  • Wants to make friends while learning
  • Is interested in eventually playing in a band

Private drums may be a better fit if your child:

  • Prefers focused one-on-one attention
  • Has specific drumming goals
  • Wants a highly individualized pace
  • Needs deeper support with certain techniques

Not sure which is best? We can help.

Could this lead to band?

Definitely. Drummers are a huge part of making a band work. As students grow, they can develop the skills they need to:

  • Keep steady time with other musicians
  • Learn full songs
  • Respond to what the group is doing
  • Create fills and grooves
  • Play with confidence
  • Perform
  • Help shape original music

For many kids, Group Drums can be the beginning of a much bigger musical journey.

Come make some noise.

The best way to know if your child will love Group Drums is to try it. Come meet the teacher, get behind the drums, find the beat, and experience what making music together feels like. No experience needed. No pressure. Just come ready to play.
