Why learn music in a group?

Kids learn a lot from a great teacher. They also learn from each other. In a Thrive group class, students get to:

  • Hear how other kids approach something
  • Play music together
  • Ask questions
  • Share ideas
  • Celebrate progress
  • Learn how to listen and collaborate
  • Encourage one another
  • Discover that they are part of something

Learning together gives kids more than musical skills. It gives them a community.

What does a Thrive group class feel like?

Kids are not sitting quietly while one student gets all the attention. They are playing. Listening. Trying. Creating. Helping. Laughing. Making mistakes. Trying again. Our teachers create enough structure for kids to feel successful while giving them room to participate, make choices, and develop their own voice.

Real skills. Bigger growth.

Your child will build skills on their instrument. But that is only part of what happens in a Thrive class.

Confidence

Every new chord, rhythm, song, or challenge gives kids another chance to discover: “I can do hard things.”

Creativity

Students get opportunities to explore ideas, make musical choices, and create instead of only copying.

Belonging

Kids learn alongside peers who are working through many of the same challenges. They encourage each other, celebrate wins, and build real connections.

Collaboration

Music teaches kids to listen, respond, communicate, and understand that what they do affects everyone else in the group.

What will my child learn?

The exact skills depend on the instrument and level, but students may work on:

  • Technique
  • Rhythm
  • Chords
  • Notes
  • Ear training
  • Songs
  • Musical patterns
  • Improvisation
  • Creative exercises
  • Playing with others
  • Performance skills
  • Independent practice habits

Technical skills matter at Thrive. We teach them so kids have more tools to create, express themselves, and make music confidently.

Questions about getting started.

That is okay. Many students begin with no previous experience. We help kids start where they are, build early wins, and grow from there. They do not need to walk in already knowing how to play. That is what class is for.

They do not need to be the loudest or most outgoing child in the room. Our teachers work intentionally to help every student feel known and included. Some kids jump into the group right away. Others need a little more time. We create opportunities for kids to participate in manageable ways, build trust, and grow in confidence over time.

Group class or private lessons?

Both can be great options.

Group classes may be a great fit if your child:

  • Likes being around other kids
  • Enjoys learning by doing
  • Benefits from shared energy and encouragement
  • Wants to make friends
  • Likes playing music with others
  • Is motivated by seeing peers grow too

Private lessons may be a better fit if your child:

  • Wants focused one-on-one support
  • Has a specific musical goal
  • Prefers a more individualized pace
  • Wants deeper attention on one instrument

Not sure? We can help you decide.

Where can group classes lead?

A group class can be the beginning of a much bigger musical journey. As students grow, they may choose to:

  • Continue to higher-level group classes
  • Add private lessons
  • Join a Thrive band
  • Write original music
  • Perform
  • Explore another instrument
  • Take on more leadership within their group

We want kids to see learning an instrument as the beginning of what they can create — not the finish line.

Come make some music.

The easiest way to know if a group class is right for your child is to try one. They can meet the teacher, experience the class, play alongside other kids, and see how it feels. No pressure. No experience needed. Just come ready to make music.
